The trees on the South Downs have been cultivated, managed, coppiced and abandoned over many years, leading to an ever changing landscape and a fascinating mixture of creeping disorder amidst the regimented plantation rows. As ever, its impossible to find a true wilderness in one of the most crowded corners of the country, but its perfectly possible to get happily lost in these woodlands for hours.
